Insert “GoDaddy” joke here

October 16, 2008

“The gays can call their get togethers farriage, but not marriage. Period.”

“Gays can call it a civil union, a peace accord, a love commitment, but it’s not marriage. Sorry guys, but it’s as if that ‘domain’ name (or term) is taken. You need to find another term.”

This is a common theme, of course: Gays can have all the rights of marriage, but keep them the bloody hell away from our precious word. Let’s leave aside the freaking field day that Ferdinand de Saussure would have with this, and consider instead whether there’s any chance that these same people wouldn’t be hollering just as loudly if we did come up with a new term. Can’t you picture it? “It’s not enough that they destroyed marriage—now they want to undermine the institution of LANGUAGE! The gays can come up with an unpronounceable symbol, Prince-style, to represent their get-togethers, but words are for straight people. Period.”

P.S. “Peace accord”?

I’m in an opposite-sex marriage, and it pissed me off that I couldn’t choose to get a civil union. If the word “marriage” is so important to these bigots, then I didn’t want any part of it.
